The Salomon XT Wings are one of the best all-around hiking shoes (or trail running shoes) ever made! While they don’t have enough ankle support for backpacking, these shoes have fantastic, vibram rubber traction, a quick-lace system, and plenty of breathability to ensure your sweaty feet won’t be too sweaty while on the trail.
Here are uncut, video reviews and testimonials of people that love (or hate!) the Salomon XT Wings:

They’re made of goretex up here, so you have a lot of breathability. On the sole you have vibram rubber, so they stick really well and give you great traction when you’re hiking.
What I really love about them is this lace-up system. You just slide your shoe one, grab this cord right here, yank it up as tight as you want it, zip it on down, and tuck it under.
This allows you to have a great amount of flexibility with how tight you want the shoe. The XT Wings provide a decent amount of ankle support for a hiking shoe. I take these guys on plenty of moderate day hikes and a few more extreme day hikes. But I wouldn’t go backpacking with them, or where a heavy backpack. They just don’t have the ankle support needed to support a 25-30 pound backpack.
I wear these shoes everyday. From just lounging around town and hanging out, to walking my dog, to a day hike. I would give the Salomon XT Wings 5 out of 5 stars. As soon as they bust on me, I’ll probably buy a new pair.
I think the lifespan is about 2-3 years, depending on how hard you use them. But a 2-3 year lifespan for a day hiking shoe is pretty good in my opinion.
