I’m interested in working in Glacier National Park during the summer.
What positions are available for summer part time employment for seniors? What are the requirements?
How do I apply? Do I apply the previous year to obtain summer employment?
Answer
Hi there!
I’m so glad you’re interested in spending the summer working at Glacier National Park. It’s such a fantastic opportunity. Not only will you get to experience the sheer awe and joy of taking in this beautiful park during the sunniest months of the year, but you’ll also get to share that excitement with others as you meet guests and co-workers.
I sure hope you get to experience it. What a fantastic ride.
Okay, now let’s get down to business. What kinds of jobs are available to seniors during the summer? Here’s the deal: Glacier doesn’t discriminate with age- (in fact, all companies technically don’t but Glacier really doesn’t… I had an 83 year old co-worker one year!). There are employees at the park who range from ages 18 to 85.
If you have the physical requirements to do the job, you have the opportunity to get it.
So, what are the different jobs you can do at Glacier during the summer?
There are so many, I can’t even hope to name them all, but here’s sampling:
- Waitstaff
- Bellstaff
- Maintenance
- Customer Service
- Hospitality
You can work in a gift shop, in a restaurant, in a hotel, or on the trails as a guide. You can either work as a volunteer or as an actual employee.

Now, another all-important question you ask: when should you apply? Well, you don’t have to be so early as to do it the year before, but you may want to anyway.
Glacier Park, Inc. accepts applications from October through April for summer employment. The most popular jobs–primarily waitstaff, bellstaff, and gardening–fill up fast. So if you want to make sure you get your first pick,
I would suggest sending in the application in October. But even if the summer is quickly approaching and you decided at the last minute that you’d love to work up in Glacier–and who wouldn’t!?–don’t hesitate to apply. You never know what might still be available.
Lake McDonald Lodge & Glacier Park Lodge open as early as mid-May at Glacier, and the season runs until somewhere between Labor Day and the end of September, so you’ll have plenty of time to work and play.
There are also other lodges and hotels to work in and around both West Glacier Montana and East Glacier Montana
And that’s so important! Don’t forget about playing! One of the greatest benefits of working at Glacier National Park during the summer is that you’ll have some time to get out into the wilds yourself.
I hope this answers some of your questions. And I hope you follow through with it–working the summer at Glacier could be a highlight of your life.
Let me know how it goes!
P.S. Any seniors out there who have already spent a summer at Glacier? How was your experience? What jobs would YOU recommend applying for?

Hello,
I am thinking about applying to work at Glacier National Park this summer. If I get a position, does your
park provide lodging or am I responsible for my own lodging?
I don’t have the funds to pay for my own lodging.
Thanks,
Elaine Carson
I work part-time at a ‘regular’ job and I’m 64 yrs old. I can get off, at most for a 2 month period but would love to do something like this. Can you work with a 2 month employment window?
Thank you! Berni
