What is the best time to visit Glacier National Park?

We are considering a trip to Glacier and really want to see lots of wildlife, especially grizzly bears.

We’ve been to Yellowstone several times in the beginning to mid-parts of June and have had much success seeing both black and grizzly bears.

We would like to travel to both national parks next summer and are wondering if we traveled to Yellowstone in mid-June and then moved to Glacier, would we be able to see bears at that time?

When do the roads typically clear, on average, in Glacier to allow travel? Thanks!

 Best time to visit Glacier

The Going To The Sun Road, which is the major road through Glacier, has an average opening of date June 7. This year (2009), it was nearly July before it opened fully. It just depends.

Because of that, and also because of weather in general, July and August generally are better times to visit Glacier than June, which tends to be chilly and wet. I wouldn’t even try for May. The first half of September also is nice. It’s cool (it can be cold and snowy), there are relatively few people, and the bears are active as they are fattening up for the winter. However, you can see bears throughout the summer in many places in the park.
